Diving EquipmentWhen you did your first scuba dives, got your diver certificates and figured out that you enjoy scuba diving, it’s time to think about your own equipment. It’s not easy to choose right scuba diving equipment. There are a lot of brands and models available in the market. How to choose the optimal one? I’m going to share my experience and advises of experts of scuba diving – Oksana Wilf and Martin Slisans.

In this post I’m not going to tell you abstract truths about the equipment. I want to share specific cases and describe specific models and details. I separate my opinion from Oksana’s or Martin’s opinions. So you could decided if it makes sense to believe. All the information below is about the recreational scuba diving, not the technical one. In case of technical scuba diving everything is more complicated.

General recommendations for any type of equipment:

  • Choose proven brands that are focused on scuba diving equipment and have extensive experience in it.
  • Don’t be fooled by marketing ploys. You need to have clear understanding for what purposes you buy a particular thing and what features it should have.
  • Sometimes it makes sense to buy a last year’s model with a discount than a new one, but made by a dubious brand. Technologies change one another not as often as seasons do it, but a price difference can be substantial.
In diving, as well as in everyday life, sometimes it’s necessary to remember the saying “I’m not rich enough to buy cheap things.” I think it is very correctly reflects my attitude to the equipment. And it’s connected to the reliability. Probably I would beware to officially recommend to buy last year’s models with discounts, because materials partially lose their properties with time. I try to treat this critical and check everything with a great attention when buying.

Personal Equipment

Mask, snorkel, wetsuit, fins, boots, socks, hood, gloves etc.

Equipment in this category should be selected primarily on the basis of convenience and compliance with dive conditions, primarily water temperature. For this equipment seasonality and extra pricing for “thingies” are very typical.

Reliable Equipment

Regulator and octo, buoyancy control device (BCD), weight system, dive computer, pressure gauge, compass, depth indicator.

Equipment in this category must be extremely reliable, from verified, well-established brands. Your life and health depend on the quality of these instruments.

Additional Equipment

Light, buoy, reef hook, knife, slate, camera etc.

In the most of cases, additional equipment is not required. But sometimes it may be required or just very useful taking into account conditions of the dive. The best principle for these type of equipment us the principle of value for money.

Recommended Brands

Universal brands (all equipment in one shop):
